Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park - Hyperlocal Safari

Central Mozambique, in Sofala Province, at the southern end of the Great African Rift Valley

About

Spanning about 4,000 km², Gorongosa lies at the confluence of the Mesopotamian floodplains, moist forests, miombo woodlands, and montane habitats near Mount Gorongosa (1,863 m). The park suffered severe wildlife losses during Mozambique’s civil war (1977–1992) but has experienced a dramatic rebound due to the Gorongosa Restoration Project, a partnership involving the government and private organizations. Conserving rivers, lakes, and savannahs, Gorongosa now supports one of Africa’s most dynamic ecosystems. Visitors can explore floodplains, limestone gorges, rivers, and mountains through game drives, walking safaris, bird watching, and community interactions.

Wildlife

Gorongosa boasts a recovering yet rich assemblage of mammals including elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, and African wild dogs. It supports diverse antelopes such as sable, impala, and warthog. Birdlife is prolific with over 400 species, including the green-headed oriole, racket-tailed roller, and paradise whydah. Seasonal flooding patterns create dynamic habitats supporting prolific aquatic species and prolific terrestrial fauna, making the park a flagship for restoration ecology.
