About
Matobo National Park lies at the heart of the Matobo Hills, an area shaped by over two billion years of geological activity. Its striking landscape features granite outcrops, balancing rocks, wooded valleys, and lush riverbanks. The park holds deep cultural significance, showcasing thousands of years of human history through ancient San rock art and sacred sites still revered today. Established in 1926, Matobo is Zimbabwe’s oldest national park and includes notable attractions such as World’s View, the resting place of Cecil Rhodes, and the scenic Maleme Dam. Visitors can enjoy hiking, rhino tracking, horseback riding, and exploring bushman cave paintings in this archaeologically rich wilderness.
Wildlife
Matobo hosts the world’s densest leopard population, supported by abundant hyrax and diverse prey species. Its game park section conserves white and black rhinos under intensive protection. Other regularly seen animals include sable antelope, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, and ostrich. Birdlife flourishes here, highlighted by the highest concentration of black eagles globally and over 175 recorded bird species. The bushveld and valleys also support hyenas, hippos, baboons, and numerous snakes.
