Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park - Hyperlocal Safari

Kilimanjaro Region, northeastern Tanzania, near Kenya border

About

Kilimanjaro National Park spans approximately 1,688 km² and encompasses the entire massif of Mount Kilimanjaro, rising from savannah and montane forest to alpine deserts and the spectacular snowy summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Kibo is the highest and youngest of three extinct volcanic cones, with Mawenzi and Shira forming rugged summits and the windswept Shira plateau. Kilimanjaro is celebrated as the world’s highest free-standing mountain and one of the Seven Summits. The park was established in 1973 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Visitors can explore varied ecological zones from lush rainforests to glaciers, and experience rich cultural traditions of local Chagga communities.

Wildlife

The park protects colobus and blue monkeys, bushbucks, duikers, and leopards across the forested slopes. Birdlife includes turacos, sunbirds, and hornbills—many species are endemic to the Kilimanjaro region. As altitude rises, unique flora appears: giant lobelias, groundsels, and heathers thrive on high moorlands. The summit hosts remnant glaciers and rare plants that survive in extreme arctic conditions. The park is a haven for trekkers and a showcase of East African biodiversity.
