Volcanoes National Park
Musanze District, Northern Province, Rwanda
About
Established in 1925, Volcanoes National Park covers 160 km² of mountainous rainforest at the edge of the Virunga Volcanic mountain range. It is Africa’s oldest national park and protects the largest remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s diverse habitats include bamboo forests, montane grasslands, swampy valleys, and heathlands located on volcano slopes. Its accessible location near Kigali makes it a top destination for eco-tourists and researchers alike.
Wildlife
The park is globally renowned for its habituated mountain gorilla families, allowing close and respectful treks. Beyond gorillas, visitors can see golden monkeys, forest buffaloes, duikers, hyenas, and a rich diversity of over 170 bird species including endemic and rare forest birds. Hiking to volcanic peaks or cultural visits related to Dian Fossey’s legacy enrich the experience.
