Ennedi Plateau
Ennedi-Ouest and Ennedi-Est Regions, northeastern Chad, on the southern fringes of the Sahara Desert
About
Spanning up to 60,000 km², the Ennedi Plateau is a vast sandstone massif sculpted by millennia of wind and water erosion into labyrinthine canyons, arches, pillars, and towering cliffs. Its landscape, both arid and visually stunning, harbors deep gueltas (desert ponds), intermittent springs, and vibrant green oases. The region’s rich history is written in thousands of rock art depictions dating back 7,000 years, revealing ancient cattle herding cultures. The area supports semi-nomadic Muslim communities living with herds of camels, sheep, goats, and donkeys, and its unique geology and beauty are a draw for intrepid travelers and researchers.
Wildlife
Despite its harsh climate, the Ennedi Plateau shelters relic populations of threatened desert fauna. It is home to Barbary sheep, dorcas gazelles, crocodiles in hidden gueltas, and varied bird species adapted to desert life. Vegetation flourishes near water sources and oases, supporting rare relict plants and transient wildlife. The area’s biodiversity and dramatic natural structures make it critical for Sahara conservation and a living testament to adaptation in extreme environments.
