Zakouma National Park

Zakouma National Park - Hyperlocal Safari

Salamat and Guéra Regions, southeastern Chad

About

Spanning about 3,000 km² in southeastern Chad, Zakouma connects the Sahel and Central African rainforest biomes. Established in 1963, the park’s savannahs, woodlands, and floodplains are nourished by the Bahr Salamat River, transforming into lush wetlands during the rainy season. Zakouma is a living symbol of wildlife revival, thanks to intensive anti-poaching efforts and community partnerships with African Parks. The park’s landscape offers dramatic seasonal shifts and some of Africa’s best wildlife viewing, with guided drives, walking safaris, and eco-camps for immersion in nature.

Wildlife

Zakouma protects some of the largest elephant herds in Central Africa, resilient Kordofan giraffes, and massive buffalo herds. Lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, roan antelopes, and tiang thrive across the plains and river courses. Birdlife is extraordinary, featuring 380+ species, including flocks of black crowned cranes, red-billed queleas, marabou storks, and Bateleur eagles. Aquatic habitats sustain crocodiles and millions of migratory waterfowl, making Zakouma a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
