Maasai Mara National Reserve
Narok County, Kenya
About
Located in southwestern Kenya, Maasai Mara covers 1,510 km² of rolling grassland dotted with acacia trees. It borders Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and forms part of the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The reserve is named after the indigenous Maasai people and the spotted appearance of the landscape ("Mara" means spotted).
Wildlife
The reserve is home to the Big Five — lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos — plus large populations of wildebeest, zebras, cheetahs, giraffes, and over 500 bird species. It is famed globally for the annual Wildebeest Migration crossing the Mara River.
