Mahale Mountains National Park

Western Tanzania, along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kigoma Region

About

Covering about 1,613 km², Mahale Mountains National Park lies on rugged forested slopes bordering Lake Tanganyika—the world’s longest freshwater lake. The park’s isolation, with no roads inside and boat access only, preserves its pristine wilderness. It’s renowned for its steep mountains, lush rainforests, and white sandy beaches. Established in 1985, Mahale is a sanctuary for endangered chimpanzees and offers thrilling trekking experiences along trails through dense forest and peaceful lakeside settings. The park’s dramatic landscapes host unique wildlife and plant species, making it a must-visit for adventurous nature enthusiasts.

Wildlife

Mahale Mountains harbors Tanzania’s largest population of wild chimpanzees, with habituated groups allowing exceptional tracking encounters. Besides chimpanzees, the park supports forest elephants, baboons, red colobus monkeys, and various bird species including hornbills and kingfishers. Aquatic habitats provide rich biodiversity, including many fish species in Lake Tanganyika. Wildlife viewing here blends forest exploration with opportunities to observe primates’ complex behaviors and relaxed coexistence near humans.
