Ruaha National Park
Central to southern Tanzania
About
Covering 20,226 km², Ruaha is Tanzania’s premier wilderness reserve, characterized by rolling hills, expansive savannahs, rocky outcrops, and the perennial Great Ruaha River. Established in 1964, it forms part of the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, an ecologically vital corridor supporting diverse flora and fauna. Less crowded than other parks, Ruaha offers an authentic and exclusive safari experience, boasting a stunning landscape where wildlife thrives amidst rivers, wetlands, and acacia woodlands.
Wildlife
Ruaha is famous for its dense predator populations, including large lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, and Africa’s largest population of wild dogs. It also supports over 10,000 elephants, buffalos, giraffes, and a variety of antelopes like sable, roan, and kudus. The park is a birdwatcher’s haven, with over 571 species such as the African fish eagle, kingfishers, and bee-eaters. The river valleys attract water-dependent species, making it one of the prime safari destinations for diverse wildlife encounters.
