Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park, Tsavo, Kenya - Hyperlocal Safari

Taita-Taveta County, Southeastern Kenya

About

Covering 13,747 km², Tsavo East features semi-arid savannahs, grasslands, and rugged landscapes punctuated by notable landmarks like the Yatta Plateau—the world's longest lava flow. The Galana and Tsavo rivers flow through the park, sustaining diverse wildlife habitats. Established in 1948 to protect dwindling wildlife populations, it is a cornerstone of Kenya’s conservation efforts and forms part of the larger Tsavo Conservation Area shared with Tsavo West National Park. The park offers remote, wild safari experiences away from crowds.

Wildlife

Tsavo East is home to large herds of elephants, known for their distinctive red dust, as well as lions, cheetahs, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and numerous antelope species. Over 500 bird species have been recorded, including ostriches, secretary birds, and various raptors. Unique geological features like Mudanda Rock offer vantage points for stellar wildlife viewing, especially during dry seasons when animals gather at waterholes.
