Covering almost 50,000 km², Namib-Naukluft is one of the biggest national parks in Africa. It includes part of the Namib Desert—the world’s oldest desert—the Naukluft mountain range, and attractions like the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. The park’s landscapes range from stark gravel plains and red sand dunes to deep gorges and rocky outcrops. It supports ancient ecosystems and houses unique flora like Welwitschia plants. Adventure seekers enjoy hiking, 4x4 trails, stargazing, and exploring the dramatic desert and mountain terrain.
Wildlife
Despite its arid environment, the park hosts a surprising variety of wildlife including oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, kudu, brown hyenas, and leopards. Birdlife is rich, with over 340 species such as lappet-faced vultures, dune larks, and the African black oystercatcher frequenting the diverse habitats. The ephemeral rivers and coastal lagoons provide vital refuges for migratory birds.
