About
Covering about 392 km², Amboseli showcases diverse landscapes including open plains, acacia woodlands, and seasonal swamps. Known for its dry lakebed and vast wildlife populations, the park offers iconic African wilderness experiences. It was established as a game reserve in 1948 and declared a national park in 1974. The Maasai people inhabit the surrounding areas, preserving rich cultural heritage. Visitors come here to see free-roaming wildlife against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Kilimanjaro.
Wildlife
Amboseli harbors thousands of elephants, renowned for large tusks and matriarchal herds. It also hosts lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and diverse birdlife with over 400 species including water birds and raptors. The wetland habitats attract hippos and crocodiles, enriching the park’s biodiversity.
