Pilanesberg National Park
North West Province, South Africa
About
Pilanesberg covers approximately 550 km² within the geological formation of an extinct volcano about 1.3 billion years old. Its varied terrain includes rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and scattered bushveld vegetation, creating diverse habitats for wildlife. The park’s location in a transition zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld makes it malaria-free and accessible from Johannesburg. Thanks to a large-scale wildlife reintroduction program, Pilanesberg supports a thriving ecosystem with over 7,000 animals and several bird species.
Wildlife
Home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—Pilanesberg also hosts cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and hippos. Birdlife exceeds 300 species, including fish eagles and kingfishers. Visitors enjoy game drives on extensive road networks, several hides for wildlife viewing, and opportunities for photography amidst spectacular scenery.
