Loango National Park
Ogooué-Maritime Province, western Gabon, bordering the Atlantic Ocean
About
Loango covers approximately 1,550 km² and is distinguished by its unique mosaic of habitats including savannahs, mangroves, lagoons, beaches, and forests. Established in 2002, it offers a rare combination of marine and terrestrial environments. Visitors often observe elephants, buffalo, hippos, and gorillas freely roaming the white sandy beaches, a sight unique to Loango. Its remote coastline is a sanctuary for marine life, including humpback whales, dolphins, and nesting sea turtles. Conservation efforts emphasize a “tourism pays for conservation” model, preserving this pristine wilderness.
Wildlife
The park supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, hippos, and leopards. Birdwatchers may find over 200 species, including the rosy bee-eater, Loango weaver, and Congo River martin. Coastal waters teem with marine life such as whales and dolphins, making Loango a prime destination for combined safari and marine wildlife experiences. The wide-open landscapes, pristine beaches, and lush forests provide habitats for many endemic and rare species.
