About

Covering approximately 1,020 km², Nyungwe is the largest montane rainforest in East Africa, situated within the Albertine Rift. The park features diverse habitats including dense rainforest, bamboo groves, wetlands, and grasslands. It is known for its pristine ecosystems, extensive network of hiking trails, and the iconic canopy walkway. Nyungwe is also a vital water catchment area, feeding rivers that flow into the Nile and Congo basins, making it an ecological treasure in Rwanda.


Wildlife

Nyungwe is home to at least 13 primate species, including habituated chimpanzees and rare colobus monkeys. Birdlife is abundant with over 300 species recorded, including many endemics like the Rwenzori turaco and eastern bronze-naped pigeon. Other mammals include forest elephants, leopards, and a variety of small mammals. The forest's incredible biodiversity makes it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-tourists.
